Across the brand portfolio, Feld Entertainment has entertained millions of families in more than 75 countries and on six continents.
Feld Entertainment needed a powerful multi-functional website that was technically sound, yet cuddly enough to attract its family clientele.
Built on the backbone of my lead strategy and wireframes, ATLARGE delivered a website that was modularly built and included complex show listings, dynamic user-generated content, and more.
Strategy & UX Highlights
Strategizing the Event Listing Page
The Schedule & Tickets page is one of the most important pages for all of Feld Entertainment's websites. We had to build a show listing page that could eloquently display multiple shows, multiple dates, and multiple cities.
To start, we listed out what users needed to be able to do. At the forefront was the need for users to see the show nearest to them. If their location wasn't being detected or the user wanted to search for a different area, the user needed to be able to search by city, state, or zip code. The user also needed to be able to sort shows by nearest them, closest date, and show type.
We also listed out the different views a user would need to see per show. If tickets were available for a show, we wanted to give users two actions - one to learn more about the show and the other to go directly to the ticket purchasing page. If a show was not on sale yet, we needed to give users the ability to sign up to receive a notification when the show went on sale.
We loosely wireframed two different versions of the Schedule & Tickets page - a 1-column list and a 3-column list. Each had its pros and cons. I gave each person in the meeting a piece of tape to mark which view was their favorite. The final selection was the 1-column view.
Geotargeting Decisions for the Homepage
At the same time we were strategizing the Sesame Street Live project, ATLARGE was in the beginning stages of rebuilding the entire technology for geotargeting users and pulling in event data for all Feld brands. This website was the first project we were building that would use the new technology, so I was heavily involved in the strategic decisions for the new technology.
There were 3 situations we needed to design for: when there is 1 show near a user, when there are multiple shows near a user, and when there are no shows near a user.
We went back and forth on the decision to even show a view if there are no shows near a user. Would showing this disappoint them? Would this save them time from searching, which might make them happy? Is this a great opportunity to collect a users email and offer an alert for them. In the end, we decided to show the "no show" view and offer a sign-up for alerts.
It's interesting to note that when we initially wireframed this website, Sesame Street Live only had 1 show. They now have 3, so revisions needed to be made at a later stage.
Creating a Modular Approach
One of the most important website requirements from Feld Entertainment was the ability to edit and create their own pages. We decided the best approach to this was to build flexible, editable modules that could be used to build any type of page.
We worked with Feld to determine all the different type of modules they might need for a page. We needed the different types of content they would need and decide how to best lay it out.
The modular approach we built for the Sesame Street Live website ended up being duplicated across multiple Feld websites. It feels really cool to know a strategy I had a strong hand in building was able to be used across Feld brands to increase the productivity of Feld employees.
